Many enthusiasts who purchase basil from supermarkets often find their plants wilting within weeks, despite their best efforts at care. Surprisingly, the problem frequently arises before the plant even enters their homes. These supermarket basils are typically composed of numerous young plants crammed together in a single pot. While this arrangement gives them a lush, full appearance, it leads to intense competition among the seedlings for essential resources like water, sunlight, and nutrients, ultimately weakening them.
A straightforward remedy to enhance the longevity of supermarket basil is to separate the plants into smaller clusters and replant them individually. To do this, carefully remove the basil from its original pot and gently divide the roots into three or four sections. It’s crucial to keep as many roots intact as possible during this process. Each section should then be transferred into its own pot with fresh compost, watered thoroughly, and placed in a warm and bright location to thrive.
In addition to replanting, regular trimming of the basil’s tops is beneficial. This practice encourages the plant to grow bushier and helps prevent early flowering, which can sap the plant’s energy. With more space and better conditions, these separated plants are more likely to remain healthy and continue producing fresh leaves.
Testing this method on a single pot from the supermarket has shown encouraging outcomes. After dividing one basil pot into four sections, three of these sections continued to grow robustly, yielding fresh leaves over the course of the next month. This approach of providing supermarket basil more space and optimal conditions can significantly extend its life as a kitchen herb, enhancing both cooking and home gardening experiences.
