French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed his support for the United Kingdom’s potential move towards closer ties with the European Union. This follows remarks from British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who suggested that the UK might explore various options for strengthening its relationship with the EU, including the prospect of rejoining the bloc.
During a joint press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Madrid, Macron highlighted that a renewed partnership between the UK and the EU would be beneficial for both parties. Sánchez echoed Macron’s sentiments, advocating for enhanced UK-EU relations.
Burnham’s comments suggest that the UK could consider a range of scenarios for its future dealings with the EU. These include establishing a closer trading arrangement, entering a customs union, or even seeking membership in the single market and full EU membership.
Macron emphasized Britain’s historical role as a significant partner during its time as an EU member and noted that any move towards closer relations would necessitate the UK accepting the rules and obligations associated with the EU’s internal market.
EU officials have maintained that it is up to the UK government to decide its path in developing relations with the bloc. However, they have indicated that the EU remains open to discussions. Both the UK and the EU are preparing for an upcoming summit in Brussels later this year to further deliberate their relationship.
