Brighton & Hove Albion produced a determined second-half performance to claim a 1-1 draw against Manchester City on Wednesday, further denting the home side’s title aspirations. City have now drawn three league matches in succession and find themselves five points behind leaders Arsenal, who hold 48 points compared to City’s 43 in the Premier League table.
The opening goal arrived four minutes before the break when Erling Haaland converted from twelve yards after Jeremy Doku was brought down by Diego Gomez. Following a VAR check that upheld the referee’s decision, Haaland stepped up confidently to score his 150th goal for Manchester City, ending a three-game goal drought and reaching 20 Premier League strikes for the season.
City came close to extending their lead immediately after the interval when Bernardo Silva took advantage of a Brighton defensive lapse, but his effort struck the post. The match saw a controversial moment when goalkeepers Gianluigi Donnarumma and Maxim De Cuyper were involved in a confrontation, resulting in yellow cards for both players.
Brighton drew level in the 60th minute through Kaoru Mitoma, who demonstrated excellent technique to guide a low shot into the far corner from the edge of the penalty area. The Japanese winger received a pass from the flank and took his time to compose himself before beating Donnarumma with a precisely placed finish.
After the equaliser, Brighton took control of the match and nearly snatched a winner. Mitoma created a chance for Gomez inside the box, but the shot was saved, and Mitoma’s follow-up from a tight angle hit the post. In the dying seconds, Haaland had a glorious opportunity to seal the win for City, but Bart Verbruggen produced an outstanding save to ensure Brighton departed with a share of the spoils.
