Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly lauded US President Donald Trump’s role in securing a peace plan for Gaza, suggesting a similar approach could bring an end to the war in Ukraine. In a statement on Tuesday, Zelensky emphasized that the momentum generated by the Middle East deal must not be squandered and can be reapplied to the European conflict.
He articulated a clear belief that American leadership is the pivotal factor in resolving the prolonged war initiated by Russia. Zelensky’s comments signal a strategic shift, aiming to leverage Trump’s recent diplomatic victory to refocus international attention and resources on Ukraine’s plight.
The Ukrainian leader revealed that he has a specific “vision” for how the United States could facilitate an end to the hostilities. “It is important that President Trump succeeded in implementing the necessary steps… Undoubtedly, the right actions by the United States can also help bring an end to Russia’s war against Ukraine,” Zelensky stated, directly linking the two conflicts.
This diplomatic overture comes amid relentless Russian aggression. Zelensky detailed recent attacks, including a bombing in Kharkiv that struck a hospital and injured 57 people. He also cited strikes on energy infrastructure in Sumy and Kirovohrad, underscoring the severe and ongoing threat to Ukrainian civilians and critical services.
In light of these attacks, Zelensky reiterated his urgent plea for advanced air defense systems like Patriot and NASAMS. He framed this need not just as a defensive measure but as a necessary component of achieving “peace through strength,” compelling Moscow to engage in genuine negotiations.
