South Africa has drawn first blood in the one-day international series, securing a commanding 98-run victory over Australia in Cairns, thanks to a spellbinding performance from spinner Keshav Maharaj. The veteran left-armer single-handedly dismantled the Australian batting lineup with a career-best five-wicket haul, turning the match on its head after a promising start from the hosts.
Chasing a formidable 297 for victory, Australia looked comfortable at 0-60 before Maharaj was introduced into the attack. What followed was a stunning collapse, as the hosts lost an incredible six wickets for just 29 runs in the space of 55 deliveries. The 35-year-old spinner was unplayable, at one point boasting figures of 5-9, ultimately finishing with 5-33 from his 10 overs, earning him a well-deserved Player of the Match award.
Earlier, South Africa’s innings was built on solid contributions from their top order. Aiden Markram (82) and Temba Bavuma (65) laid a strong foundation, allowing Wiaan Mulder to add a quickfire unbeaten 31 at the death to push the score to 8-296. Despite a four-wicket haul from part-time spinner Travis Head (4-57), the total proved to be more than enough.
Australian captain Mitch Marsh fought a lone battle, scoring a resilient 88, but he received no support from the middle order, with no other specialist batter reaching double figures. Once he was dismissed by Nandre Burger, the result was a foregone conclusion, with Australia eventually being bowled out for 198 in the 41st over.
