A cyberattack linked to Iranian hackers has been identified as the cause of a temporary shutdown at a small British power generator, raising alarms about the potential escalation of cyber threats directed at the UK. The incident took place last month and caused the power facility to remain offline for four days. Despite the disruption, the UK government assured that the attack did not pose a risk to the broader electricity network or the national energy supply.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero highlighted that the facility affected was a small-scale generator, and stressed that the UK’s overall energy system continues to be secure and resilient. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) confirmed that there have been no reports of outages impacting major regulated power stations.
This cyberattack occurs at a time of heightened tensions between the UK and Iran. Recently, Britain has permitted the United States to carry out defensive operations against Iran from US-operated bases on British soil. In response, Iran has cautioned that any bases utilized for attacks on its territory could be deemed legitimate targets.
Western security agencies have previously sounded alarms about Iran-linked groups targeting critical infrastructure. The United States has also accused the CyberAv3ngers group, affiliated with Iran, of compromising infrastructure systems across various sectors.
The recent incident has once again brought to light the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to state-linked cyberattacks, underscoring the increasing cybersecurity risks posed by hostile nations.
