Vietnam’s VNREDSat-1 satellite program has established a significant groundwork for future collaboration with France in space technology. Initially launched on May 7, 2013, VNREDSat-1 marked Vietnam’s first venture into Earth observation satellites. Officially handed over for operation in September of the same year, the satellite has exceeded its anticipated lifespan of five years and remains operational into 2026, celebrating its 14th year in service.
The program has not only facilitated satellite operations but also enabled Vietnam to advance its expertise in various technical domains. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent intensive training programs in both France and Vietnam, acquiring skills in system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. This training empowered them to address technical issues independently, marking a transition from following transferred procedures to innovating their own solutions.
In addition to personnel training, Vietnam has developed an integrated remote-sensing system that covers imaging requests, satellite control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has contributed nearly 30,000 satellite images, supporting environmental and natural-resource management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and defense and security activities. Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, emphasized that the program has laid a crucial technical and human-resource foundation for upcoming satellite projects. However, he noted that increasing technological self-sufficiency would require further advancements in satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems.
A new chapter in the Vietnam-France space partnership commenced during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies inked a declaration of intent for long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation. The collaboration is set to explore the development of a next-generation Earth observation system and investigate technological options for a proposed VNREDSat-2.
Future endeavors are expected to focus on enhancing Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications. Opportunities for strengthening domestic expertise may arise in areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and select sensors and payloads. The overarching goal is to transition from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing them, thereby achieving technology mastery. This progression will enable Vietnamese scientists and engineers to gradually design, operate, troubleshoot, and ultimately develop future satellite technology independently.
